NPCTS -National Performance Criteria for Tornado Shelters

ALL STORM SHIELD TORNADO SHELTER MODELS MEET
OR EXCEED THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW

ICC 500 Sect 502.2 Access Opening -- Requires access opening minimum size 24" wide x 30" long.
SS4 & SS6 @ 24" x 64"; SS12 @ 26" x 62"
ICC 500 Sect 502.3.1 Vertical Access -- Requires minimum tread depth 8" and maximum riser height 9-9/16"
SS4, SS6, and SS12 Tread depth 8-1/2" and Riser height 9-1/2"
ICC 500 Sect 502.3.1 Vertical Access -- Requires minimum Stair width 22" and slip resistant surface.
Stair width variable but not less than 22"; non-skid tread surface applied.
ICC 500 Sect 502.3.1 Overhead Clearance -- Requires minimum overhead clearance 6'-8" or 5'-0" with signage.
SS4 - 5'-5"; SS6 - 6'-1"; SS12 - 6'-10" All Storm Shield Tornado Shelters have signage.
ICC 500 Sect 502.3.1.2 Handrail required on stairways having more than three stairs.
All Storm Shield Tornado Shelters have a continuous handrail on one side of stairway.
ICC 500 Sect 502.4 Occupant Density -- Requires minimum 3 sq ft usable shelter area per occupant.
SS4 @ 4.2 sq ft; SS6 @ 3.6 sq ft; SS12 @ 4.4 sq ft per occupant.

NPCTS
Requires minimum 3 hinge attachment points and 3 positive latch points.
SS4 , SS6 & SS12 with 48" or longer continuous hinge; Available with 3 positive latch points.
NPCTS Requires exterior key accessibility for post storm Emergency Entry by EMS personnel if needed when latches are engaged from the inside.
All Storm Shield Tornado Shelters exceed requirement. Emergency access made possible by removal of one nut per latch with standard adjustable wrench.

All Storm Shield Tornado Shelters manufactured to meet or exceed structural design criteria listed.

Windborne Debris Hazards -- Requires tornado shelters exposed surfaces to be designed tested to emulate wind speeds of 250 mph. 15-lb sawn lumber 2x4 missiles impacting exposed surfaces less than 30 degrees from horizontal at 67 mph and exposed vertical surfaces at 100 mph.
Component design and testing performed under the over site of a third party engineering firm.
ICC 500 Sect 702.1 Requires 2 sq. in. or 4 sq. in. of natural ventilation based on location of ventilation ports per occupant.
All Storm Shield Tornado Shelters manufactured to meet or exceed ventilation requirements.
SS12 = 25 sq in /2 = 12.5 person occupancy
SS4 & SS6 =33.52 sq in /4 = 8 person occupancy
